SELENA BAILEY WATKINS

From
Born in Texas. Raised in Yonkers, New York

Bio
Meet Miss Black New York USA 2012, Selena Bailey Watkins, a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of Rutgers University with a BFA in Dance and in Journalism/ Media Studies. Selena has learned that humility, positivity and perseverance will take you on the highest road. Selena's platform as Miss Black New York 2012 is Health and Wellness with a goal to partner with organizations that gear toward optimal health through fitness and a better quality of life. Being healthy is simply about feeling good within the mind, body and spirit.

What do you do?
I am a Dancer, Fitness Instructor and Radio Producer. It’s quite an interesting mix but each title is a part of my ultimate goal to inspire the world as a global figure.

Why do you do it?
I’m passionate about each thing I do. Dance has been a part of my life since childhood and I’m empty without it. Radio is something I’ve become skilled at since college and I’ve grown to love Fitness dearly without realization. I love helping people attain their goals, physically and mentally.

What inspires you?
Knowing that the universe will provide you with anything you ask for and believe in, is what inspires me to stay optimistic and persistent toward my ambitions.

Why is eating healthy, CLEAN FOOD important to you?
Eating healthy is important to me because I believe all chronic diseases are preventable. Heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity are all things we can control, if we nurture our bodies with the right food and a decent amount of physical activity. It’s also fun to eat healthy. Honestly! Making new recipes with raw foods that taste good and don’t make you feel sluggish is a great thing.

What do your prefer: Juice or Smoothie?
I usually prefer smoothies because it’s easy to throw together when you’re on the go.

Favorite Juice or Smoothie recipe?
My favorite Juice recipe--Kale, Kiwi, Pineapple, Pear and Apple.  It’s Amazing!

Your vision for the future of healthy eating?
I hope that in the next few years, this nation will begin to take fitness more seriously. Exercise is simply about feeling good inside and out. The more physically active you are, the more inclined you’ll be to nurture your body with clean food and the essential vitamins and minerals. It should become second nature to eat healthy, rather than a daunting task.

Motto on Life
I have a few mottos I live by and tell myself daily:

The first is Perseverance: “The reason some people give up so fast is because they look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have come.”

The second, Determination: “Good Isn’t Enough, You have to be Great”

And the third, Individuality: “The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.
