This week starts the further re-opening of many more cities, states and their respective businesses around the world, as we all prepare to deal with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Contrarily, many other cities, states, and countries are extending their lockdowns to ensure that they come out of this pandemic in the healthiest and safest way possible: for the sake of the people and the economy. The reality is that there will be no set formula for reengaging and reintegrating society back to a perfect state of normalcy. The reason being is that this situation has affected everyone differently, leaving some worse off than others. But, as we start to slowly get back to our new normal, we will notice that some businesses will continue to thrive and get back on track as if they never missed a beat. The unfortunate part of this situation is that there may be a slew of businesses that will not make it through this pandemic. With many people thinking about saving their money, balancing budgets, and figuring out their employment situation due to furloughs and layoffs, anything beyond the essentials may not be top of mind. As a result, the business that would have relied on this excessive nature of our consumer behavior may falter. So how do we balance this situation? How do we help our communities that were once bustling streets of shopping and engagement from becoming depressive ghost towns?
The last time we posted here was a little over 3 years ago. At that time, our current President of the United States, Donald Trump was just elected and beginning to establish his presence as a future leader on a global scale. At the same time, we were saying goodbye to another leader of the American people: President Barack Obama. As they are two very different leaders, we can only expect two different expressions of the world as a result. President Barack Obama inherited a record high unemployment rate in November of 2008 of 14% from President George W. Bush. President Donald Trump will likely have a similar number or even higher in the months to come: especially as the global economy begins to reel back and learn how to adjust to the new reality caused by the current Covid-19 global pandemic. Throughout these respective presidencies, we've had global health concerns with anthrax, SARS, Ebola and salmonella. And if we venture further back into history, we will find our timeline filled with many other concerns like the West Nile Virus, the AIDS epidemic, Polio, the Spanish Flu and many others throughout our short, yet dense American history. Then on top of it all, there have been the decades of natural and man-made disasters and crises: the 9/11 terrorist attacks, blackouts, earthquakes, massive floods, tsunamis, economic recessions and depressions, heavy pollution, hurricanes, effects of climate change: quite frankly the list is unending. If we have directly or indirectly experienced any of these things, we know the effects these global shifts and abrupt changes have had on our mind, body, spirit, and on the immediate environment around us. They rock our foundation.
Who flies 2,572 miles and 6 hours for the weekend? Well, apparently I did. And all for the sake of life enjoyment. I didn't need a better reason. And naturally, I ended up eating great food, staring at great art (as seen above), and soaking up the sweetness in the air and in the people of San Francisco. I landed in Pacific Heights (courtesy of Airbnb): a very lovely and residential area dominated by grand homes, great coffee, eclectic foods, beautiful families, great boutique shopping, and enough power workouts and yoga to keep your body tight. And if the workout classes are not enough for you, you can always brave walking up and down the rolling hills embedded in the city streets. The temperature was always quite cool this time of the year. It's definitely autumn, but it was so nice. Some days I went out without a jacket, and some days I did. In this way, it did remind of me of New York during the Fall. But there was something about SanFran that I immediately fell in love with. Maybe it was the yoga. Maybe it was the chill vibe. Maybe it was the subtle, but notably chic energy of the people. Maybe it was the arty scene. Or maybe because it reminded me of "a New York City", yet outside of New York City. Whatever it was, it called my name and demanded the energy of exploration into this amazing city. I was ready to travel deeper. Much deeper.
Last year, Italy changed my life. I mean, overall, everything changes our lives. The food we eat. The books we read. The music we listen to. The work we do. The decisions we make, the people and the circumstances. Everything affects our lives and our lifestyles. But I will say that my deeper exposure to the Italian culture really took my understanding of La Dolce Vita to a whole new level. After my trip last year, I made a conscious decision to study the culture and lifestyle of the Italian people. And part of that took place when I came home: of course with Kaite's help. Also, I started taking classes in efforts to study Italian. But as you can imagine, you can't really study and speak a language until you begin to digest and understand the culture surrounding that language, and I'm not only talking about the food: I'm sure many of you bi-lingual and multi-lingual people know this very well. But I'm just learning all about this. Katie's family in Italy doesn't speak much English. So, learning about the language and the culture became a priority for me last year, and especially this year. But as you can imagine, studying Italian for a few months would not be enough to immerse me fully in the country and all of its nuances just yet. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful launching pad for what I was set to experience this year.
So this picture was taken first thing in the morning. All my soft and subtle blemishes. The lines in my face: in the corners of my mouth and the ever so light one in my forehead. The super light, bump-bity bumps canvasing my face that are reminiscent of goosebumps you get when the room is chilly. All my freckles, moles, and birthmarks. And unfortunately, there's that slight darkness under my eyes from living in this crazy world. It's all here. No photo filters or special applications used here to make me look a certain way. Nope. Nothing at all. I just washed my face with a little warm water to wipe the gunk out of my face so you wouldn't think I was a crazy person. And I have to say, at this moment in time I'm the happiest I've ever been with my skin. In my early teens through high school, I was plagued with pimples and acne all the time. Even as I made my way into my early to mid-twenties, acne and pimples would never leave me alone. Then, there was more drama: cracks in my face, clogged pores in my nose and in my skin. And to top it all off, my greatest fear of all came to the surface. I saw a gray hair.
It's safe to say that in the project: CLEAN FOOD household, we're hummus fanatics. And why not? It's full of protein, fiber, and vitamins – making it one of the healthier dip options. But, as much as we love to eat it, a thought struck me: what would it be like to make it from scratch rather than buy it pre-packaged? So, yesterday, as I prepared Mother's Day dinner, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to make my own hummus for the first time (which is actually a little risky, now that I think about it). The result? I was pleasantly surprised to find that the preparation was simple and the taste was rich, creamy, and delicious. Whether you decide to make it for yourself, for friends, or to impress your mother, we're sharing our recipe – guaranteed to wow.

And truthfully, it should represent the truest and most liberated expression our entire being. What we see in our home will provide a beautiful mirror reflection of what we see in ourselves. This is probably why when we have people over for a visit, we're always so super particular as to who's granted access to our humble abode. And whether you love to entertain or not, we all love when those fortunate few come into our home and experience those other beautiful parts of our life: our food, our family, our inner beauty, our entertainment, and most importantly, our decor and style.

The color combinations of fabrics and drapes, of wood finishes and rug choices, it all adds to the look and feel of our home. The choices in art, the creative display of coffee table books, the fragrances pervading the air of the home, the arrangement of furniture, fixtures and florals, it's all super important for creating that clean living lifestyle in our place of solitude. And this is not just for your guests, this is for you: for your peace, happiness and tranquility. We do this to feel good about our home: when we leave it and when we return. So whether you're super organized and cleanly, or a hoarder of all things beautiful (and not so beautiful), here are some things to keep in mind when creating a stylish home with a peaceful energy flow.
Raspberries are probably the most powerful of the berries by far (next to blueberries and blackberries). They can be found in many parts of the world, from Asia to Central America, and even right here in the USA. The raspberries come in many varieties and many species; so it's not uncommon to see them in other colors like purple, yellow, and even orange. The most common color of raspberry is red: and even the red ones come in various varieties as well.

Each raspberry has a balanced set of nutritional benefits that are not always the same in each variety. So depending on where the raspberry is cultivated, one variety may have more protein or more manganese than others, for example. This is great because the raspberry will provide an adequate and balanced nutritional boost that is most likely necessary for that particular environment of cultivation.
Here we have one of the most amazing and super healthy foods here on planet Earth. This beautiful fruit is a part of the berry family. It was originally cultivated in China. Some other original cultivators of the fruit were India, Siberia and New Zealand. Today, Italy is one of the largest suppliers of Kiwifruit around the world. And, in addition to its worldly origins, it has a host of benefits that make it our superfood of the week. Curious? Read on.
Laundry is probably one of my least favorite chores. I get it, some people love it – the peaceful monotony of folding coupled with the smell of fresh clothes – but not me. For as long as I can remember, I have gladly left laundry in the very capable hands of my laundromat and never thought twice about it. Well, that was before I ended up at the dermatologist's office a few weeks ago, with a full-body allergic reaction. As she looked at me, she said, without hesitation, "this is an allergy to fabric softener. I just know it." Now, I am allergic to a lot of things, but fabric softener was never one of them. But, as I scanned my body, I knew that I had to change something. And luckily, through trial and research, I found a pretty incredible alternative to fabric softener that is safe, non-toxic, and most likely in abundance in your home.

For some of us, stylish clothes and accessories are just vain idols of our materialistic fashion industry. Um, duh. Of course they are. And, with a little twist of life enhancing benefits. We all love fashion and style. There are many, though, that tend to relegate our industry of beautiful things as just merely, "stuff". And in essence, it is stuff. But our dear friend Miranda Priestly, would abhorrently disagree. The [fictional?] fashion queen has beautifully said that this thing we call 'stuff' only came to be because of the beautiful fashion styles from designer collection upon collection, which would eventually trickle down to the casual corners of the world through mass production. So thank goodness for innovative designers like DVF, Ralph Lauren, and Marc Jacobs for their amazing creations leading to our beautiful and joyful bounty of stuff. Ah that stuff. It brings us such sweet joy. It makes us feel good. It makes us feel appreciated. And not because we try to be stylish and fashionable. But, it's when we become that fashion and style, our lives pour over with happiness. It's Bella Moda (Italian, pronounced Bel-la Mo-da): that beautiful fashion of yours. That individual unique style and fashion. It is when we step into that and live like the fashion deities that we all are, then we experience that life changing and enhancing bliss. But how does this happen? When does this happen? Well, in all honesty it's not something you're taught, but it's something you just kinda figure out: like most things in this wonderful world.
We all love yoga. The practice is remarkably amazing as it provides a number benefits both mentally and physically: and in some cases, spiritually. The unfortunate part is that it can be a big undertaking to make that time for class on a daily or weekly basis. If class is one hour long, there is usually a lot time to factor in for pre and post yoga class: 20 min to get there and get ready, 60-90min in class, another 20 min to shower and change. Easily a two to three hour process. Ugh. Long, I know. Having worked on a financial trading desk many years ago, I know that we may not easily be empowered to go to class and practice yoga at the end of a long and intense day. So what to do when you can't make class? Keep practicing of course. However, not all of us have the privilege of enjoying a liberated schedule or have the privilege of creating our own schedule. The end result is that many of us end up sitting at a desk for work: crunching numbers, plugging in data, creating presentations, doing research, writing programs, you know what I mean. The average person working in the 9-5 corporate world (really 9-7 or 8) is in most cases sitting at their desks all day in an oddly cramped position that usually keeps us in our seat for long hours during the day. And when we sit in these weird positions, our body suffers over the days of doing so. Our body really suffers in more ways than you could ever imagine. We have to correct that. And yoga can help with that.

The mighty ginger root has been in usage for thousands of years. Originally cultivated in Southeast Asia, it found early prominence in India and China. Eventually, it found its way around the world with the help of early controllers of the spice trade. Ginger gained popularity not only because it was appetizing in many dishes, but also because of its powerful healing effects. Many people of the Caribbean found usage in this same way. And that's probably why my Grandmother and my Mother (from Jamaica) would give it to me as a young boy to help soothe my upset stomach, or if I was struggling with a cold or flu. When I was in India some years ago, I noticed many people chewing on it after a meal. I later found out that if chewed (and not swallowed), it can provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals that are essential for good digestion and ridding the body of toxins. And If you've ever had sushi, you've probably seen that thinly sliced pinkish thing in the mix. That's also ginger. Many times we eat it with our sushi to help with digestion, or simply to enhance taste. And of course we can't forget about our sweets and desserts that are infused with Ginger: namely cookies, cakes, breads, ice creams, candies, and many others.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">My eyes open up. I stare at the ceiling into blank space. And then, like most, my mind starts to race around and think about all the things I need to do today: make breakfast, make lunch, do laundry, make dinner reservations for me and my girlfriend's date night, run other errands, and let's not forget the good ol' work grind. All that, plus all the other things I'm planning for my life and the fact that I get sucked into the world of social media looking at Kylie Jenner's latest California Romp, seeking out beautiful food pics, or ogling some fashion designer's new collection on Instagram for another 10 minutes. And in the blink of an eye, 25 minutes have passed since I've been up. And now it's time to get moving for the day, and magically, I'm running late. But here presents another problem: I have to make time to workout, exercise, and meditate. Like I, legit, HAVE TO make time to do these things. My body needs it. My mind needs it. And it's pretty much how I function. And it's my version of wake and bake.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">So here's my solution. I developed a 25-minute workout and meditation plan that helps me feel good in the morning and gives me enough energy to start my day. It's not your killer make you drip sweat workout. Neither is it an intense super-scientific meditation practice with lots of visualization and breathing techniques. This here is simple stuff. Anyone can do it. And here's how I kick it off.

As we move through some subtle planetary shifts, some people may be noticing that everything "feels heavy." Sounds super scientific and "new-agey", but it's true. I know I feel that sort of heaviness. I felt so heavy that I finally remembered to take some days off and rest: and juice it up. Truth be told, we all may experience this lack of motivation and weariness. And this is how we know that it is time for everyone to slow down a bit. But because it is time to slow down, that doesn't mean that it is time to become super lazy. We can use this time of rest to rejuvenate and heal the body. So we've got a nice juice recipe to not only blast out any sort of cold or sinus problems that may be manifesting, but also to get rid of any sort of heaviness that you may be experiencing as of lately.

Fasting. Who likes it? Probably no one truly enjoys it. Popular among various religious sects and belief systems, many followers of the fasting ritual do it for health and spiritual benefits. We are focusing on the health benefits here. Because 50 buffalo wings, 5 beers, and 100 cheesy appetizers and dips later, you could be setting yourself up for a stomach ache in the morning. Totally not project: Clean Food approved. But at the end of the day, it is Super Bowl: we understand. And besides, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, and Coldplay at the half time show are enough to excite anyone to eat and drink things that may not necessarily agree with our bodies. But fear not, we've got you covered. We hope you ate and celebrated joyfully this evening. Because tomorrow, we're prescribing a little 18-hour fast to help invigorate and rejuvenate your body after tonight's amazing romp. It sounds a lot harder than it actually is. And if it's any motivation, Coldplay's Chris Martin is likely fasting tonight or tomorrow according to his new 6:1 diet (eat 6 days, fast 1 day).

Oh, avocados. This amazingly healthy–and very unique–fruit is filled with all sorts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. It's different from other types of fruit in that it's not high in carbs (major plus), but it is high in heart-healthy fats that are very purifying, therapeutic and revitalizing for the entire body. It's also one of the most versatile foods, best eaten raw, and super-effective in oil form. So we're dedicating our Sunday to this amazing little plant. And here's why.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">If I could write a love song to Italian food, I would. Growing up in an Italian household, pasta was basically a food group. So, when I made the switch a clean eating lifestyle, I had to say goodbye to many of the things I was accustomed to eating: prosciutto, pasta, bread, mozzarella, you name it. I have been on the quest to discover and create Italian dishes that are vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and dairy-free. Phew, do I sound like a cliche or what? Luckily, there are so many delicious alternatives out there. And, with a little creativity and playfulness, you can create meals that taste just as good as the "real thing." Like my Vegan Pasta All'Amatriciana. Which is super-delicious and easy to make. So, as they say in Italy, andiamo!

I<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">'m sure you've taste-tested your fair share of Thai dishes: Pad Thai, Penang Curry, Tom Yum Soup, Peanut Duck Lettuce Wraps. Need I say more? If you're anything like me, you've ordered takeout or sat in a trendy restaurant, lounge music blaring, and thought to yourself, man, I wish I could cook like this. Well, the short answer is, you can. You don't have to be a top grade chef to cook these dishes (true story, I've cooked both on a hot plate as I wait for my landlord to replace my stove) All you need is a sense of adventure, a little time to prepare, and an open palette. Are you ready to impress with these project: CLEAN FOOD recipes?

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">Recently, I had the good fortune of being invited to an IVY Connect panel discussion with Dr. Holly Phillips, a contributor to CBS News and author of the new book The Exhaustion Breakthrough. I have always been intrigued by the idea of energy in the body: where it comes from and how it affects our everyday lives. During this event, I had an a-ha moment. I realized that many of the behaviors viewed as "normal" are actually telltale signs that we need to take a step back and be honest with ourselves. For example, do you find yourself yawning uncontrollably at 3:00 pm when you're in the umpteenth meeting of the day? Do you make excuses not to exercise or socialize because you're just not feeling up to it? Are you nodding out every night on the couch at 9:00 pm? Do you just wish you had a little extra oomph? Do you feel like you're in a fog when you wake up in the morning? Are you drinking more than one cup of coffee and/or eating sugary foods to keep your energy "up?"

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">If the answer is yes to any one of these questions, then you, my friend, need to read on. The secret to energy isn't found solely in sleep (although don't get me wrong, it's important), but in various lifestyle choices and patterns that you can control.

When 2007 hit, I finally decided that eating terribly, partying hard and drinking myself into oblivion was no longer serving me: go figure. The recession hit, for me that is. But somehow, I managed to keep the facade going. The life I lived would seem ideal to most people. You know, a scheme of appearances. Great relationship. Great job. Great friends and family. I traveled a lot. And then there was yoga: I had been practicing for about two years at that point. Seemingly all good, right? All sounds like someone that should be happy and content with things. But, something was missing. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But that feeling of "something missing" had always been with me ever since I can remember: probably since I was 9 or 10 years old. Ever since I was a young boy, I would write a lot. Poetry. Short Stories. Songs. I loved writing. So it always served as an outlet for me to express and understand myself. But in 2007, writing and reflecting was no longer enough. I craved something more, something deeper. I wanted to feel better than I was feeling. I was tired of feeling disconnected. I was tired of feeling purposeless and lost. And with regard to my health, I was tired of feeling sluggish and low-negative energy. The lifestyle of poor diet choices and alcoholic indulgence was basically me attempting to fill a void within myself that, in all honesty, was never filled. However, that life I was living served as a springboard for what I was about to dive into. The job. The relationship. The friends. The old lifestyle. Even the yoga. It all flung me right into a new project: a project of clean food and clean living. 0 to 100. Real quick.
reflect on the past 365 days and make promises to ourselves for the future. We resolve to be happier and healthier. We resolve to take the steps to exercise, diet, go for a new job, find a fulfilling relationship, or maybe even take up a new hobby. But,
after the month is finished and the excitement of the new year starts to wind down, we suddenly find ourselves back in our old patterns. Hmm, sound familiar? Well, you’re not alone. We’ve been there –
and apparently only 8% of people who set resolutions actually achieve them, so
we know you’ve been there too. But, despite the statistics, we're committed to a happier, healthier, more fulfilling 2016. And, to get there, we're doing things a little differently.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have to admit something. I am a true beauty junkie – always up for trying the next greatest trend in skincare. But, as my skin sensitivity has become heightened like never before, I've become ruthless with what I put on my skin. I pore over ingredient lists, accost sales people, and scan product bar codes using the ThinkDirty app (highly recommended by the way). But then it hit me. Why am I constantly struggling to try to find a product that works, compromising on ingredients or scents, when I can make my own? After doing some research, considering the skin's needs, and knowing what ingredients trigger flare-ups for sensitive skin (coconut oil is a no-no), I created an easy DIY Essential Oil serum, using pure, food-based ingredients, that really does wonders for smoothness, evenness, and texture. Ready for better skin?
Pure Dark Chocolate. The brown deity itself. After a holiday season packed with sweets of all kinds, we're turning our attention to one of the best dessert-type foods for you there is.
