Superfood Sunday | YOU'VE GOT KALE

By Dominick H

Superfood Sunday is a weekly series where project: CLEAN FOOD features the absolute best foods to nourish – and naturally heal – your body.  To help you start each week right, we reveal the one must-have food to add to your diet. Enjoy, and share your inspiration with us by tagging #projectCLEANFOOD on Instagram.

We won't beat the horn on this one. But one of the most powerfully, nutritious vegetables worth moderately incorporating into the diet is Kale. Yes, it's a little odd looking and maybe some of you hear all those vegan-vegetarian peeps talking way too much about it. In all honesty, I didn't really know much about it way back when. But when I took the green pill and went after my first kale-based freshly-blended juice about 7 years ago, I was hooked. But let's be honest: it's bitter, it tastes a little like grass, and it doesn't go down so easy. But what if I told you that most of the vitamins and minerals the body needs rest right inside of this beautiful green masterpiece? You might be more inclined to give it a try, no?

Like anything, your body oftentimes needs to adapt to Kale. And that's okay. Don't let your preconceptions of this superfood get in the way of trying (and even enjoying) it! Let's go over a few of the reasons why you should, why don't we:

Firstly, Kale is loaded with Vitamin C. It's not only citrus-based fruits that carry Vitamin C. Kale can load the body up with the proper dosage it needs. In addition to this highly-acclaimed cold fighting vitamin, Kale has been notoriously associated with B-vitamins, fiber,  and protein (um yea. protein. from a plant). This veggie has also been known to ward off a variety of diseases and illnesses in the body. Many sufferers of Cancer have attributed their successful battle with the disease to utilizing Kale in their juices and meals. Maybe because this little powerhouse helps in cleansing the liver and kidneys, as well as helps in reducing inflammation in the body. Basically there is a ton of good stuff in this plant.

Now don't go crazy and live off of Kale. While it is very good for you. You don't need it everyday: unless of course you're sick or are dealing with some sort of body ailment that needs remedied. Just like any vitamin, take it as long as you're deficient. Once your body is up to speed and functioning correctly, save it for a rainy day. Some people actually take a liking to Kale when it is steamed or put in a salad, or in a juice. And there are many sorts of snacks and "junk foods" that are made using kale: desserts, chips, ice creams, etc.

So try bringing a little Kale into the diet. Again, it doesn't need to be everyday: unless you genuinely want it or need it everyday. Otherwise, all the body needs is a few doses to get back on track.

Go for the green!
